Il SMAR-TeR Project is part of the European Clean Sky 2 research and development program, created to launch public-private partnerships between the European Commission and the European aviation industry with the aim of creating innovative aircraft in terms of environmental impact, i.e. more efficient in consumption and generally more respectful of the environment throughout their entire life cycle.

It is a CS2 project under the Fast Rotorcraft - Innovative Aircraft Demonstration Platforms (FRC IADP), whose objective is the study of innovative systems that can be integrated with a technological demonstrator operated with rotors and propellers identified in a new generation tiltrotor (the Next -Gen Civil Tiltrotor, NGCTR) of Leonardo Helicopter Division.

Abstract

The SMAR-TeR project aims to respond to a need of Leonardo Helicopters Division regarding the study and definition of new generation flight control specifications for Tiltrotor aicraft.

Main Objectives

Study of new flight control architectures characterized by the presence of haptic sensors, providing a force feedback to the pilot (and therefore a sensory perception of the control operation), despite the connection between the control and actuators is electronic (fly-by-wire).

System identification techniques development and adaptation to create reliable models of human feed-forward behavior, human neuromuscular dynamics, control behavior in closed-loop tasks and helicopter dynamics. Reliable inceptor sets composed by mechanical and software sub-systems to be integrated in the NextGen CTR flight simulators.
 Active and smart functions to provide feedback to the pilot by means of real-time force and/or haptic feedback Virtual development in order to verify in XR environment the more promising inceptor configurations before passing to the prototyping. Cockpit CAD project optimization in an ergonomic key, by means a hands motion tracking viewer and the use of wearable systems in order to obtain an Ergonomic verification of solutions in the immersive environment. Investigation and develop of new inceptor system design practice with Smart Electromechanical Actuators; Active and Haptic Capabilities, future Pilot Intent Estimator SW for automatic estimation of trajectory; Failure Prevention Logic of the components (i.e. sensors, actuators and components devoted to command chain) by means of the prognostic approach thus complementing the classical approach based on the Hardware Redundancy.
